About coffee breaks, circles, green food and green motion
Usually the first day at a new place stays in mind, but not for me. I guess we stood in circles, played some rhythm games, that just showed me how ungifted I am when it comes to rhythm, and drank coffee.
Then it was time for the second day, which pretty much contained trust and team games, getting used to the translation system, standing, sitting or lying in circles and of course the coffee break.
Besides all that the Danes had to choose their subjects. We the international students were rather busy with trying to sing in Danish. It was a shocking moment when I realised that I would sing for one year during every morning assembly from a book called Højskole Sangbogen in Danish.
The first weeks anyways were full of surprises, just coffee breaks and circles were reasonable. I got told how important green motion and even greener food was for a life. Green seems to be an important colour in Denmark.
I found out that the Danish youth avoided speaking German to a native speaker not to feel green (that stands for inexperienced), not to be recognized as non native German speakers that make mistakes. Of course when they were blue all languages get a lot easier to talk. ( If a person is described as blue in German this points out that this person is drunk, in this article not to be misinterpreted with the English form that points out that sb. is sad.). Just a tip: If you want to get free shots wear a Denmark jersey.
After some time you get used to live at the school. You start to think, this is normal, at least I did. And then you find out that still everything is new. The question is, when does new become old. The definition says it will never. And that is the point again, Højskole is always new.
The best example for new is Captain Morton. Captain Morton “commands” J the EuroClass. As soon as you step into the sphere of the EuroClass(room) you will get surprised because no matter what you guess you will be doing you will always be surprised Only the coffee break that is for sure and that Captain Morton’s class will never be arranged in a circle.
Having said this, this is just the beginning of a great fellowship.
